Volunteer & Foster

Fostering saves lives. Volunteering saves more. Here's how you can get involved with AAVA.

Fostering for AAVA

Fosters are the backbone of our rescue.

If we do not have a foster, we cannot save the animal. Fosters are essential — many choose to foster short term while animals wait for transport to their forever homes, and others foster long term until a forever home is found.

Fosters are not financially responsible for the care of the animal. Animal Aid for Vermilion Area provides all food and vet care. We do ask that fosters bring their animals to vet appointments. If you choose to cover food, vet costs, and transportation expenses yourself, all of these are tax-deductible.

We also ask that fosters attend at least one adoption event per month at PetSmart in Lafayette on Saturdays. We welcome your family to attend with you! Events are typically held from 10:30am until about 4pm. We love when fosters provide updates, pictures, and stories about their foster animals — it helps the adoption process tremendously.

Shelter Day Saturday

Volunteer at the shelter every Saturday.

AAVA volunteers spend a few hours each Saturday at the Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control (VPRAC) facility interacting with the dogs and cats currently in the shelter. Volunteers take pictures, bathe, socialize, and temperament test animals — all things that dramatically improve their chances of being rescued.

Must be 18 years or older to volunteer at the shelter.
